What made you decide to come to the Heroes 6K Race in Palm Springs?
I work in recovery at two treatment facilities.
What have you noticed in the lives of people entering your treatment programs that have changed the most from their time there?
Most people go in to treatment thinking that their dependency on a chemical or substance is the real problem. But then they start realizing that they are the problem or the way they are thinking is the problem. First, they need to remove the dependency and then start working on changing the way that they think or how they approach things. One of the cool parts about working with people in recovery is seeing the lights turn on when they see that it’s more than just chemical dependency and that they need to change a lot of how they do things.
In your experience, what have you noticed has helped make those lights turn on?
I can only speak for me, as someone who has gone through it. For me, it was just a lifetime of things not working. Everyone gets to a different point when that light comes on. A common thing is that people start to realize they are not alone. They start to hear other people’s stories. They see other people feeling the same way they do. As alcoholics, when we first come in we think we are alone in the situation or different from everyone else. But we aren’t. We are all in this together.
